Do not trim off edges of possible tumours. These are the most important areas for the prognosis. If the tumour is very large, slice to aid fixative penetration or send a representative slice less than 1cm thick, including the edge with the smallest surgical margin. We recommend excision biopsy rather than cytological aspirates because results are more reliable.
